Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in university. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage at the home of one on the jury. In the course of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
